Bridge Construction & Repair

Construction of a Link Bridge Building at University Hospital. Cork City

Contract Details:

Cumnor Construction Ltd. carried out the role of Works Contractor and PSCS for this project.

The works were carried out under the GCCC Public Works Form of Contract for Minor Building and Civil Engineering Works designed by the Employer.

The contract involved the construction of a new link bridge corridor in two phases at first floor level. The work was carried out within a busy, active, live acute hospital and therefore a high level of care was necessary to ensure the safety of the patients, staff and members of the general public.

The building remained fully open and live directly below the works. Noise restrictions were in place as the works were being carried out directly above theatre rooms and patient rooms. There was a requirement for the installation of new specialised mechanical and electrical equipment.

These included various new buildings, conservation, restoration and repair work as well as civil infrastructural project work. Best practice conservation techniques were carried out on the site.

Contract Details

The works involved the construction of twenty-one luxury houses in a mixture of two and three bedroom properties. The houses achieved A Energy rating.

External works included new foul and storm water systems, watermains and all services, construction of roads and paths and the installation of lighting.  There are substantial reinforced concrete retaining walls included in the siteworks also.

The works were carried out within Kinsale Town, a busy tourist destination. The roads within the town are narrow and often one-way traffic is allowed. Traffic management plans were therefore designed in order to co-ordinate deliveries to the site. This required having larger deliveries to the site during off peak times as roads were often required to close temporarily in order to facilitate the deliveries.

Noise, dust and vibration control measures were in place in order not to impact the neighbouring environment.

Contract Details

New reinforced concrete retaining walls were constructed in various locations throughout Cobh. These retaining walls were then clad with natural stone. Remedial work to other masonry walls was also carried out. This included removal of vegetation and existing deteriorated pointing. Repointing was carried out and sections of the retaining walls were rebuilt. Much of this work required netting and underpinning. Tie bars were drilled through the existing walls and grouted to further support these old masonry walls.

A new earth embankment was designed and constructed. This embankment was built directly behind existing houses. The work area was extremely restricted with special equipment required to carry out the project.

Soft and hard landscaping work was completed. Existing damaged footpaths were removed and replaced with new concrete reinforced footpaths. A new road drainage system was installed.

Detailed traffic management plans were implemented. All roads remained open while the work was being completed. Adequate signage and traffic controls were implemented in co-ordination with Cobh Town Council, Cork County Council and An Garda Síochána.
