Rock Stabilisation Works At Plunkett Station, Waterford

Cumnor just successfully completed this public works contract for Waterford City and County Council and Iarnród Éireann. The rock face formed the south flank of the Mount Misery hill, with lower sections cut in Victorian times for the purpose of accommodating the railway infrastructure. The length of the rock face to which remedial works were planned was approximately 400m. The rock face is up to 60m high in total, very steep in places, including sub-vertical parts at the toe.

The scope of works consisted of;

  • Clearance and disposal of vegetation over the rock face;
  • Establishment of site compound and safe area of work in vicinity of Irish Rail line;
  • Establishment of any temporary works area at the top of the slope in Irish Rail lands. The access to this area was with hoists from the rail track level.
  • Scaffold, plant and rope access to cliff face to complete the works; Installation of rock bolts, rockfall protection netting and catch fences;
  • Construction of reinforced and unreinforced earth berms and rock traps.
  • Construction of a drainage system involving horizontal drains, interceptor ditch, chute pipe and intake, energy dissipation manhole, manholes and buried drainage;

Completed Thru Restaurant Café + Associated Works in Ashbourne, Co Meath.

This project was for construction of two new stand-alone buildings within an existing retail park in Ashbourne, Co Meath.

The scope of works consisted of;

  • The provision of a restaurant with takeaway services and drive-through with 248sq.m
    and unroofed service yard extending to 44sq.m and including cold room of 13.4sq.m.
  • The provision of a café with takeaway services and drive-through extending 127sq.m
    and an unroofed service yard measuring 21.4sq.m.
  • The provision of outdoor seating associated with both the restaurant and café buildings.
  • Amendments to the existing surface car park resulting in a reduction of parking spaces.
  • Provision of new internal road layout to accommodate the proposed café and restaurant
    including new access and egress points.
  • Relocation of existing wastewater pumping station and new culvert drainage system.
  • Hard and soft landscaping, pedestrian crossing points and associated traffic calming measure.

Some of the site constraints included:

  • Working adjacent a ‘live’ public road.
  • Working at height.
  • Working in a live retail car park.
  • Various utilities buried in ground.

Finalists in the ICE Awards 2022

The Irish Construction Excellence Awards recognises performance excellence for the contracting sector in Ireland. Cumnor have made it to the final this year for our work in Structural Conservation and Restoration works to a building at Shandon Street, Cork City.

This project returned two dilapidated but historic architectural buildings to their former glory, delivering high quality social housing to the local community in Cork City Centre in close partnership, Cork City Council and the entire project team. The works included construction, structural consolidation and conservation.

Construction of 12 Apartments at Coach Street, Cork City

The existing site is a disused commercial premises at an approximate size of 526m2. The project consists of the following works:

  • Site enabling works and construction of temporary hoarding
  • Demolition of existing buildings
  • Consolidation of adjacent structures
  • Excavations and formation of foundations
  • Construction of 2 blocks consisting of a mixture of 2-bedroom and 1-bedroom units, totaling of 12 apartments, 1no. 4-storey block and 1no. 2 storey block.
  • Installation of floor structures and stairs
  • Flat roof construction
  • Associated Mechanical and Electrical Works
  • Development of communal areas and paved outside areas
