A striking transformation of one of Cork’s most beloved green spaces, this project revitalised Bishop Lucey Park with a design-led architectural and landscape intervention that celebrates both heritage and contemporary public space. Based on an award-winning scheme by Hall McKnight Architects selected through an international competition, the park was reimagined to open up the historic site and enhance its role as a welcoming urban destination.

The redevelopment carefully exposed and showcased the city’s medieval walls, now a defining linear feature along the park’s edge, strengthening the connection to Cork’s rich historic fabric. Major heritage elements—including the Christchurch graveyard, Seamus Murphy’s “The Onion Seller” sculpture, John Behan’s iconic “The Swan Fountain” and the Boxer’s Wall—were preserved and sensitively restored, reinforcing the park’s cultural legacy within a modern setting.

Environmental stewardship was central to the works, with the protection and retention of mature trees and thoughtful soft-landscaping throughout. The design integrates varied green spaces, biodiversity-rich planting and new seating and gathering areas that support both active and passive recreation for all ages, encouraging greater public use and enjoyment.

Constructed within a live urban context, Cumnor Construction delivered the project with meticulous care for heritage, landscape and community value, creating a cohesive public park that balances historic identity with contemporary architectural quality and environmental sensitivity.
